
Noida, Uttar Pradesh -Two additional builders have been arrested by the police who are connected to the tragic demise of a 27-year old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, whose vehicle went down into a water-filled excavation trench in Sector 150, Greater Noida, earlier this month.
Reportedly, the SUV that Mehta was driving on 1617 January crashed into an open excavation hole located at the side of an unfinished commercial piece of land under foggy conditions. He was still alive under freezing ice water more than 90 minutes after being trapped in a frantic effort to save his life, but his body was retrieved early on 17 January. Since then, Noida Police have also arrested two other builders, whom they blame for not taking proper precautions like barricades and warning signs around the pit. Previously, a single programmer, Abhay Kumar, was arrested and charged under different provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, among them culpable homicide through negligence.
An FIR was filed against MZ Wiztown Planners Pvt Ltd and Lotus Greens Construction Pvt Ltd, as the police claimed that there were serious safety lapses that contributed to the death. The government has widened the investigation, and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has assumed suo motu notice on environmental and regulatory breaches connected to the location, which further reinforces systemic oversight issues at building development tracts.
The tragedy aroused serious responses among both the authorities and the residents. The Uttar Pradesh government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the entire situation of the accident, including administrative violations and the implementation of safety standards. It is said that show-cause notices have also been given to authorities in charge of the site and traffic management in the area of Sector 150.
Both the builders and the civic authorities have been blamed by the family members and the local residents in ignoring successive warnings on safety concerns. there have been grumbling that there was a known danger of barricades and reflectors on the excavation several weeks before the accident.
Public Safety Measures
In reaction to this, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has commissioned an overall transformation of the road safety protocols, with the immediate placement of barricades, reflectors and hazard markers in the area to avert such a tragedy.
