Greater Noida Flyover Plan Approved: Major Connectivity Boost for Commuters

Greater Noida Authority has approved the Phase I of a double-decker elevated corridor, which would help decongest the traffic on the Shahberi stretch and improve connectivity between Greater Noida West and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The decision came up in the 144th board meeting of the Authority.

Under the first phase of the project, there will be a 2.5 km long double-decker elevated road between the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Ek Murti Chowk at the cost of Rs 756.01 crore. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) prepared the detailed project report (DPR) and agreed to execute the project.

This project has been conceptualized in order to resolve traffic congestion on the Shahberi Road, which links the Greater Noida West area with Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad. According to reports, the existing Shahberi Road is 15 meters wide but is subject to encroachment, thereby making it difficult to cater to growing traffic.

Earlier, the Authority had proposed a single elevated road for this stretch. However, after some technical deliberations, the plan was revised. NHAI then studied two proposals – a double-decker road from Ek Murti Chowk to the drain, and a single-deck elevated road along the Shahberi drain.

In light of the assessment, the committee decided to select the stretch of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to Ek Murti Chowk for the first phase of the project. The rest of the stretch will be developed in the later phase.

7-km Route Needs Distinction

There have been various reports of the project in the media. Earlier, it was reported that there would be a 7-km double-decker flyover between Ek Murti Chowk to Delhi-Meerut Expressway, but later, it was explicitly said that 2.5 km was being developed as the first phase and the budget allotted was ₹756.01 crore.

Hence, the 7-km stretch cannot be reported as the length of the first-phase project. The first-phase length is only 2.5 km.

As per the report, the ₹756.01 crore first-phase cost will be equally borne by the Yamuna Expressway Authority, Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority and Ghaziabad Development Authority.

The project is aimed at ensuring better connectivity between Greater Noida West, Shahberi, Crossings Republik, and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Nevertheless, the project is still in the approval and development stages. According to Mint, further approval from concerned bodies such as the Noida and Yamuna bodies is still needed, while NHAI has not finalized all the details of the project yet.

Greater Noida Authority has also approved the road connectivity project to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE). As per reports, the existing 6-km-long, 105-meter-wide road from Phade will be extended to the EPE.

Furthermore, 12 km of road development is still required for the proposed connection. NHAI has agreed to develop the 12-km road, whereas Greater Noida Authority will take care of acquiring the land for the project.

The first decision is the creation of road infrastructure that is to be developed to increase connectivity in the Greater Noida region. This particular double-decker corridor is meant to alleviate congestion in the Shahberi stretch of roads and build an elevated connection to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.

The project should therefore be viewed as an approved infrastructure proposal rather than an operational or completed road. Its implementation will depend on the required approvals and subsequent project execution.

Upon implementation, the double-decker corridor will serve as a connecting link between Greater Noida West and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.
